Paper Shredder Maintenance 101

Have your own personal paper shredder, but not sure how to maintain it? Take some tips from the pros.

  1. Empty the paper shredder collection bin. Be sure to dump out the paper shredder collection bin every once in a while, even if it is not yet full. This creates a good habit to keep your shredding station tidy. Remember, paper shreds are meant to be disposed of in the trash can, not the recycling bin.

  2. Oil the blades regularly. Over time, your paper shredder may not run as soothly as it did when you first started using it. Using materials like shredder oil or lubricant sheets will keep its performance in tip-top shape. We recommend oiling your blades each time the shredder bin is full. Always check your shredder manual for instructions on what tools to use and what method is safest.

  3. Clean out the blades. Use a can of compressed air to remove debris and paper bits out of the blades so that the machine can operate smoothly and with a clean surface.

  4. Wipe down your machine. Especially in shared office spaces, remember to give your machine a quick wipe with soap and water or with a sanitization wipe.
